Ovens not working at all.

Free fix for your range cooker electric ovens.

Have you recently gone to use your oven and found it won't turn on, even though it worked fine yesterday?

( your children/grandchildren may have something to do with it )

One common cause is simple, the clock hasn't been set , or has been played with.

Believe it or not, many range cooker ovens won't work at all until the clock is set/programmed to manual. This is especially so after a power cut or being switched off at the wall, but there is another reason this happens:

           kids pressing buttons.

Your exploring child has found little round shiny buttons and a shiny clock at eye level, they give them a press and suddenly your Sunday roast is off the menu.

           How to fix it:

Look for a blinking clock on the display, or an A symbol near the numbers.

Reset the clock as per user instructions.

If this doesn't work try the age old repair of turning it off at the wall (wait 30secs) then try setting your clock.

Once set the oven should now work as normal.

Setting the clock may seem like a small thing - but it is often the key to getting your oven working again. Most range cookers with a digital clock require the clock to be set before the ovens work.

An expensive call out charge could be avoided, its worth a try.

We can keep your britannia alive!!!

So I have been receiving lots of calls and emails lately from customers with the same story.

They have had a local engineer out to repair their 20 year old britannia cooker and have been advised that parts are now obsolete, can no longer get parts, they do not make them anymore etc, etc.

           Aaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!, this is not true.

We can still get britannia parts for all your repairs and servicing needs.

I worked at britannia for over 20 years and I know how good they are and how long they last.

I hope this simple little blog reaches who it needs to and stops engineers writing off perfectly good cookers with a simple repair and potentially saving the customer a few thousand pounds for the cost of a replacement.

           Kind regards,

How Safe are your Gas Appliances?

A startling report by Gas Safe Register has revealed that on average, one in six gas appliances in the UK are deemed unsafe.

As we move swiftly into December’s festivities, Gas Safe Register and the Fire and Rescue Services have joined forces and are urging everyone to have their gas appliances checked. December has been found to be the time when the most unsafe boilers, fires, cookers and range cookers are detected. Appliances that are not working safely and efficiently can result in gas leaks, explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning and fires.

The research went on to identify the UK’s top ten cities and the percentage of gas appliances inspected found to be unsafe were:

Gas Safe Register cannot stress the importance of having an annual gas safety check for all appliances so that “families can enjoy the holidays with peace of mind that their gas appliances are working safely and efficiently.” Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have said that in addition to regular gas safety checks, ensure your appliances are well maintained and you have both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed.

To protect you and your family, always make sure the engineer who is carrying out any work or safety checks is Gas Safe registered.

Carbon Monoxide: Know the Facts

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous gas that is difficult to detect; it is colourless, odourless and tasteless and can cause serious health problems and even death. CO is a result of the incomplete burning of natural gas, LPG and other materials that contain carbon including wood, coal, gasoline and propane.

CO happens when gas appliances have been incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or badly repaired. Household appliances such as cookers, boilers and heater are the most common causes of accidental exposure to CO however; blocked chimneys, flues or vents – even though they are not the direct source – can stop CO escaping which can result in high levels of the poisonous gas in the air.

The symtoms of CO poisoning are not always obvious especially when exposed to low levels. There are six main symptoms to watch out for:

           1. Headaches

           2. Dizziness

           3. Nausea/vomiting/stomach pain

           4. Breathlessness

           5. Collapse

           6. Loss of consciousness

The initial symptoms are not dissimilar to those of food poisoning or flu however; CO poisoning does not cause a temperature and symptoms will be less severe or may even disappear when away from the source of the CO leak. Other family members will have similar symtoms that started around the same time and this applies to pets too.

With Father’s Day nearly upon us, we have only a few days to grab Dad a special little something to let him know how much we care. Whether Dad’s an outdoor kinda guy, a Whiskey lover, a bookworm or an adrenaline junkie, a quick search on the internet will pull up loads of fab gifts.

But maybe you’ve left it just that little bit too late and missed the delivery cut offf or you can’t get into town and didn’t fancy buying him anything from the local supermarket, then getting creative in the kitchen might just be the answer. Cooking a delicious meal for your old man is sure to wow him and let him know how grateful you are that he’s your Pop!

How about this BBC Good Food Great British breakfast bap to start the day? It’s super easy and will go down a treat!

           Ingredients:

           2 tbsp sunflower oil
4 pork or veggie sausages
3 handfuls frozen chips
4 rashers smoked back bacon or meat free slices
4 eggs
4 large floury soft white baps
400g can baked beans
butter, ketchup and brown sauce, to serve

           Method:

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Use 1 tbsp of the oil to lightly grease a large, shallow roasting tin. Scatter the chips over two-thirds of the tin and line the sausages up on the other third. Cook for 20 mins, then toss the chips around, turn the sausages and return to the oven 10 mins more until the chips are golden and the sausages browned. Push everything together to make room in the tin, then lay the bacon rashers in the space and return to the oven for 10-15 mins or until the bacon fat is crisp and sizzling.

Five mins before the bacon is ready, heat the remaining 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan and fry the eggs however you like them. Heat the beans in a saucepan or in a microwave.

Split the baps so they are still hinged at one edge. Butter and sauce as you like, split each sausage lengthways and, building from the bottom up, layer the chips, sausage, bacon and egg. Present the bap open for extra sauce and to keep the yolk intact. Serve small pots of beans on the side for dipping and spooning over.

And remember to clean up after yourself and don’t leave it for Dad!!

To maintain optimum performance of your range cooker regardless of brand, it is advisable to have your appliance serviced annually. So whether yours is a Britannia, Rangemaster, Ilve, Falcon, Bertazzoni, Mercury or Lacanche, treating your range to a service with Range Cooker Care will ensure your stunning bit of kit keeps on performing.

           Happy Pancake Day!!

Shrove Tuesday falls 47 days before Easter, it immediately precedes Ash Wednesday and will always be between 3rd February and 9th March but what isit? Why do we celebrate it? And why pancakes?

The word shrove derives from the English word shrive, meaning to be granted absolution for one’s sins through confession and penance. Traditionally, a bell would be rung to call the villagers to confession and Anglo-Saxon Christians would go and admit their sins to a priest. They were then ‘shriven’ or absolved from their sins. This bell later became known as the Pancake Bell and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday is the customary feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. It is the last opportunity to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the 40 day Lenten fast; these types of rich foods are not generally eaten during this period.

Each ingredient is thought to represent one of the four pillars of faith – eggs for creation; flour for the staff of life; salt for wholesomeness and milk for purity. The practice of mixing the ingredients for pancakes is disputed and for some, it has Pagan roots and for others, it is of Christian heritage.

Traditional English pancakes are made of batter, fried in a frying pan and served hot with sprinkles of sugar and a splash of lemon juice. Today there are a variety of pancakes to suit possibly everyone’s dietary requirements including vegan, dairy free, paleo and gluten free. Pancake toppings have also been given a contemporary revamp where we see sweet potato, coconut, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds making an appearance.

Whether you have a Britannia, Ilve, Rangemaster, Mercury, Falcon, Bertazonni or Lacanche, why not get inventive and make some delicious pancakes on your range cooker tonight…..happy flipping!!

New Range Cooker?

Thinking about a New Range Cooker? Good!

The beginning of another year and you can almost hear the wind whispering peoples’ vows of being kinder to themselves by eating healthier; doing more exercise; cutting down on the booze; eating less meat; losing weight; drinking more water, blah blah blah!

Forgive the cynic in me but enter mid January and those ‘well pondered upon’ resolutions have now been cast to the newly appointed ‘to do’ list which always starts on Monday! Whilst waiting for that glorious Monday to come and pave the way for our new us’ (again), we sit down in front of the TV with a glass of wine and a Dominos on route and start to consider what needs doing in the house. Then reality kicks in and we realise that our bank accounts haven’t even begun to recover from Christmas; we can kiss those thoughts of a new bathroom, sofa or kitchen goodbye…for now anyway!!

Until that sweet day comes when our bank accounts have been replenished we’ll have to make do with our old stuff and let’s face it, it could be a while. Speaking carbon footprints though, not everything NEEDS to be replaced and it’s often a case of WANTING to be replaced and if you’ve got a range cooker standing proud in the kitchen you’ll know what I’m talking about. Whether it’s a Britannia, Ilve, Falcon, Mercury, Bertazonni, Lacanche or Rangemaster, the chances are that beauty will still be standing proud 20 years on.

Having your range cooker serviced every 12 months will keep your appliance in optimum condition and ensure you’re getting the most out of it. Our engineers are based in the North West of England and cover Manchester, Sheffield, Blackpool, Liverpool and North Wales.

According to uSwitch, the cost of cooking accounts for around 4% of the average gas and electricity bill and by cooking a little smarter, we can reduce the amount of energy we use whilst cutting bills in the process.

The amount of fuel we use during cooking is pretty high compared with other household activities and if you’ve got an energy monitor, you’ll have probably noticed how much more the oven uses! The oven uses far more electricity than virtually all other appliances in your home so its worth following these handy tips to make sure you’re cooking as efficiently as possible.

           1. Cook as much as you can in the oven in one go.

           2. Try not to open the oven door mid-cooking as the oven loses heat and needs more energy to get back up to the right temperature; keeping the oven door glass clean will allow you to look through it rather than having to open the oven door to see how your food’s doing.

           3. Make sure the door closes properly – check for worn seals, hinges and door catches and if need be, get them replaced as soon as you can.

           4. Get to know how long it takes for your oven to reach temperature so you can start cooking once it’s at the right temp.

           5. Pre-boil potatoes and root vegetables before roasting to cut down on the cooking time.

           6. Reduce cooking time by cutting food into smaller pieces.

           7. If you have a fan assisted cooking option, use it! This allows the temperature to be set lower than if you use the conventional oven option.

           8. Turn off the oven ten minutes before the end of cooking time and leave your food in – your oven will keep to the same temperature and finish off cooking your tasties.

           9. Using stainless steel skewers in food such as joints of meat and baked potatoes will speed up the cooking process.

           10. Keep a clean oven! Food debris absorbs heat making your oven less efficient.
